Vanilla ice cream or whipped creamOptional, for serving
Instructions
Prep the apples. Peel the apples and cut them into cubes.
Add the lemon juice. Squeeze the lemon over the apples to keep them from browning and add a touch of brightness.
Mix the filling. Toss the apples with the flour, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. The flour thickens the juices as the crumble bakes.
Make the crumble topping. In a separate bowl, combine all the topping ingredients. Use a pastry cutter or your hands until the mixture looks like wet sand.
Assemble. Transfer the apples to your baking dish, along with all their juices. Dot the cold butter pieces over the top.
Add the topping. Spread the crumble evenly over the apples.
Bake. Bake for 30 to 45 minutes at 350°F (170°C), or until the top is golden brown.
Serve. Take it out of the oven and serve right away with whipped cream or ice cream.
