Red Onions with Lime and Soy Sauce (Taqueria-Style Topping)
Español There’s nothing quite like red onions seasoned with soy sauce, lime, and oregano to go with a good plate of carne asada tacos.
Honestly, I can’t imagine eating tacos without onions. That crunchy, tangy, flavor-packed bite combined with a juicy arrachera, ribeye, or sirloin… there’s just nothing better.
I do have my classic pickled red onions with vinegar that I love for potato tacos, but when it comes to grilled meat tacos, these taqueria-style red onions with lime and soy sauce are always the winner.

Ingredients
1 red onion, thinly sliced
⅓ cup fresh lime juice
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 teaspoon dried oregano
½ tablespoon salt (or to taste)
2 serrano peppers
How to Make Red Onions for Tacos
- Slice the onion
Thinly slice the red onion so it absorbs all the flavor.
- Prepare the base
Place the onion in a bowl and add the lime juice, soy sauce, oregano, and salt.

- Prepare the peppers
Lightly roast or sauté the serrano peppers.
Remove the skin and seeds, then slice them thinly.

- Mix everything
Add the sliced peppers to the onions and mix well so everything is evenly coated.

- Let it rest
Let sit for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Refrigerate for a stronger, deeper flavor.
